Cherokee is physically larger in every direction. Passenger volume opens up to 107.4 cubic feet versus 100.0 in Compass. Behind the second row, Cherokee carries 33.6 cubic feet of gear. Compass holds 27.2. Fold the seats and Cherokee jumps to 68.3 cubic feet against 59.8 in Compass.

If you haul hockey bags, hunting packs, or Costco runs for a crew in Spearfish or Rapid City, Cherokee’s extra cargo depth matters every week. Compass still works for couples or smaller families who park in tight Belle Fourche spots and do not need the stretch.

Power, MPG, and Range on I-90

Cherokee’s hybrid system uses a rear axle disconnect as standard hardware, which helps efficiency on dry pavement. Compass has no hybrid option for 2026. On windy winter commutes across the northern Black Hills, Cherokee’s EPA-estimated 37 combined mpg and longer tank range cut fuel stops. Compass still delivers solid turbo punch for merging with 200 horsepower on tap.

Towing: 2,000 vs 3,500 Pounds

Compass maxes out at 2,000 pounds. That covers a small utility trailer or a pair of snowmobiles on a light deck. Cherokee doubles the story at 3,500 pounds, enough for many fishing boats, pop-up campers, and weekend toy haulers common around western South Dakota.

If you tow even a few times a year, Cherokee’s rating is the safer long-term bet. Pair either SUV with the right hitch, brake controller, and seasonal service at our service department before you head toward Deadwood or eastern Wyoming.

Off-Road Hardware: Trailhawk Compass vs Standard Cherokee

Compass Trailhawk is the rock-crawl specialist in this pairing. It adds a 1-inch lift, 8.6 inches of ground clearance, skid plates, Falken all-terrain tires, Active Drive Low, and a 20:1 crawl ratio for slow trail work. That is real hardware, not just badging.

Standard Cherokee ships with Active Drive I, 8.0 inches of clearance, and Selec-Terrain drive modes. It handles gravel ranch roads, snowy Belle Fourche streets, and light trail days without the same rock-first focus as Compass Trailhawk.

Jeep has been spotted testing a Cherokee Trailhawk, but it is not released yet. Treat it as in development until Jeep confirms production timing and specs.

Tech, Safety, and What the Tests Show

Compass comes standard with an 8.4-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen. Cherokee steps up to a 12.3-inch screen plus a 10.25-inch digital cluster and a rotary shifter. Cherokee includes Active Driving Assist (Level 2) as standard equipment, which helps on long I-90 stretches.

IIHS crash testing is worth a look before you buy. The current Compass earned Marginal in the side test and Poor in the moderate overlap front test per IIHS published ratings.
